The US postal van from Utilimaster is unlike anything you’ll see on British roads. With its unusual shape, walk-in design and unmistakably American proportions, the Utilimaster Aeromate is the definition of the word ‘unique’. And while it started as a specialist delivery vehicle, it’s found new life as a promotional vehicle.
But how did such an unusual American postal truck come about, and why is it sought-after for brand activations? Here’s the story behind the Utilimaster Aeromate mail truck, from its delivery heritage to its modern-day role as a marketing vehicle.

What is the Utilimaster Aeromate?
Utilimaster is a US manufacturer specialising in commercial vehicle bodies and delivery vehicles. The company has been around for over 40 years, with US postal van designs focused on practical features like low entry, full standing height, and access to cargo.
One of the vehicles in our fleet is the Utilimaster Aeromate. Introduced in 1989 and more widely manufactured in 1991, it’s a distinct vehicle built using Chrysler components and designed for frequent-stop routes. There’s plenty of space for large boxes, while the low floor and accessible layout make it easy to move between the cab and cargo area.
Discontinued in 1994, it’s a niche vehicle that’s rarely seen – even in the US.

Built for complex delivery routes
The story of this US mail truck is closely linked to how deliveries developed across America. As the country grew, the Post Office relied on specialist vehicles to cover long routes and transport larger volumes of mail.
The National Postal Museum documents the evolution of postal vehicles, including early ‘sit or stand’ US postal vans that gave carriers easier access to mailboxes. That practical thinking has since shaped generations of American postal trucks.
Rather than simply adapting basic vans, manufacturers prioritised visibility, function, and access. Utilimaster became part of this industry, producing purpose-built vehicles and bodies for postal and commercial use.
With a 317-cubic-foot body and a payload of up to 2,050 lb, the Aeromate catered brilliantly to large deliveries. Decades later, those qualities would make it the ideal marketing vehicle for sampling, awareness, and all other kinds of brand activations.

Turning to Hollywood
This US mail truck’s appearance made it a natural fit for the big screen. Its tall, boxy frame and American styling could add character to any scene, whether it was being used as a background vehicle or in a more prominent role.
Over the years, the American postal truck has appeared in films and TV shows like Men in Black (as the iconic Zap ’em van), Ace Ventura, Baby’s Day Out, and Hotel for Dogs.
Our own US postal van has a Hollywood story of its own. Before joining the Promohire fleet, it was purchased from Pinewood Studios, where it starred in a number of films and TV productions.

A promotional powerhouse
Today, the classic Utilimaster Aeromate has a very different role. Its spacious interior and recognisable shape make it the perfect choice for brands looking to take their message to the public. And because it never hit UK roads, it’s a completely unique promotional vehicle – only seen by UK audiences through the silver screen!
This US mail truck can be transformed to suit any campaign. Use it as a sampling van with a serving hatch and branded counters, add a bold wrap that commands attention, or put up a roof sign for extra visual clout. It's far more special than a conventional van, giving people a genuine reason to stop and take notice.
