How to Create an Immersive Double-Decker Bus Experience

A double-decker bus offers more than a moving billboard. With two levels to customise, you can create an immersive brand experience that invites visitors to explore, try something new, and learn more about what you do. From interactive games and beauty bars to photo opportunities, the right setup can turn a branded bus into the must-see destination.

But audience engagement takes more than just vehicle branding. Here are our tips for making the most of double-decker bus hire, from designing the interior to choosing interactive features.

Plan the visitor journey

How will people move through the bus once they step onboard?

A successful brand experience should feel easy to explore. Consider the main entry point, which activities should be encountered first, and how a guest will move between areas. If a game or sampling station is likely to attract a crowd, make sure there’s enough room for people to queue without blocking access.

You should also consider guest flow and placement. For example, if you want guests to get a drink after taking photos, then a serving counter should be the last place they visit.

Make the most of both decks

Give each level a clear purpose, from interactive moments to product discovery.

Double-decker buses offer two distinct spaces to work with, so think about how each can be customised for your campaign. The lower deck could feature a display wall and sampling station, while the upstairs could have a beauty bar or product discovery area. This creates different zones and creates even more reasons to explore.

You don’t necessarily need both decks to be visitor-facing, either. Part of the bus could be used for stock or supplies, keeping the main experience tidy. You can also include photo ops on both levels, with different props and backdrops.

Carry your branding throughout the bus

Connect the exterior design with the guest experience found inside.

The outside of a branded bus needs to grab attention – and that’s fine if you’re only after a moving billboard. If you’re looking to make a much bigger impact, then carry the colours, graphics and messaging inside through wall graphics, displays, props and brand-consistent finishes.

Think about how the design will look in photos and reels, too. Premium displays and well-placed signage can make the space feel more immersive while helping convey what your brand is all about.

It’s all about creating an immersive brand experience that’s recognisable, rather than feeling like a collection of unrelated features.

Ensure the setup works behind the scenes

Build for a practical experience so brand ambassadors can put guests first.

Your interactive brand experience still needs to work for the people running it.  Depending on the campaign, you may need dedicated storage and equipment, product stock, or some additional standing room for staff – especially if you’re product sampling.

Considering this early helps avoid a design that looks great in photos but fails to deliver the experience your audience deserves. Other questions to answer include how you’ll power the activation and how samples will be restocked.

Include audio/visual elements

Use sound, lighting and screens to make the experience more immersive.

Audio-visual features can turn a branded bus into a distinct environment that engages the senses to take your campaign to the next level. Think about music, branded video content, digital displays or lighting that changes to suit the different areas of the bus.

Screens can show how a new product works, share your brand’s story, or show your impact within communities. Audio can be used in a similar way or simply set the tone – whether that’s a relaxed atmosphere or something more upbeat and exciting.

Make room for play

Give visitors a chance to let loose, get creative or try their luck.

Playful features can make a double-decker bus feel more like an attraction than an everyday brand activation. You could add a competition with prizes to be won (like a spin-to-win game), an art zone, or even a ball pit for a playful photo opportunity.

You will have to consider space, however, as a ball pit will need enough space to be safe and accessible, just as a creative workshop will likely need chairs and tables.
